In an effort to combat food insecurity among older adults, SCAN Health Plan has announced a new grocery benefit for its 2025 Medicare Advantage plans, in collaboration with Instacart.
The initiative aims to address food insecurity, a critical issue for seniors, many of whom struggle to access healthy and affordable meals. By 2050, an estimated 9 million seniors are expected to face food insecurity, according to data shared by Karen Schulte, president of SCAN’s Medicare division.
Through this partnership, SCAN members will receive a grocery allowance, accessible via Instacart, allowing them to purchase nutritious, culturally tailored food options designed to support those with chronic conditions such as diabetes. Schulte emphasized that individuals with limited access to healthy meals are at a higher risk of developing chronic health issues, making this program essential to improving health outcomes.
“Health equity is embedded in SCAN’s approach… We are constantly innovating to tailor benefits that address health disparities and ensure members have access to the care and services they need,” Schulte explained.
The collaboration with Instacart extends beyond food delivery. SCAN is already exploring ways to expand the partnership to further meet the needs of its members, particularly those who face barriers like limited mobility or transportation challenges. Schulte also noted that Instacart’s push into healthcare aligns well with SCAN’s mission, as the delivery service actively seeks to improve health outcomes for its users.
In addition to helping seniors access groceries, the initiative also has the potential to reduce loneliness, a growing concern among older adults. Even brief interactions during grocery deliveries could provide social connection for seniors living alone, Schulte said.
The program is a direct response to member feedback, with many seniors expressing the desire for services that save money and simplify their lives. The Annual Enrollment Period for 2025 Medicare Advantage plans begins October 15, 2024, and runs through December 7, 2024. Coverage will start on January 1, 2025.
