Escalating Conflict: Israel Claims Killing of Top Hezbollah Official as Lebanon Displacement Surges
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated further on Sunday, with Israel claiming the killing of another high-ranking Hezbollah official, Nabil Kaouk, following the confirmation of the deaths of multiple commanders, including longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah, by the Lebanese militant group, The Associated Press reports.
This development comes hours after an Israeli airstrike on northeast Lebanon resulted in the deaths of 11 people. Israel has stated that it is targeting Hezbollah installations in Lebanon.
The escalating violence has led to a surge in displacement from southern Lebanon, with the United Nations reporting that the number of displaced individuals has more than doubled to over 211,000.
Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in near-daily strikes since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7th, following Hamas’s incursion into Israel. The conflict has sparked widespread fears of a regional war.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi expressed deep concern about the escalating situation during a graduation ceremony at the Police Academy in Cairo on Sunday.
“The ongoing developments are very serious and could lead to expanding the conflict’s theater,” he warned.
