Vice President Harris to Meet with Zelensky in Washington Next Week
Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, D.C., next week, CNN reports, citing sources familiar with the planning.
This meeting comes amidst growing concerns regarding the potential impact of the upcoming American election on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and US policy towards Ukraine.
While the White House has not officially confirmed the meeting, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby hinted at the possibility, stating that Vice President Harris has previously met with Zelensky in person and spoken with him on the phone. He suggested that “if the opportunity presents itself,” they would likely meet again.
The meeting between Harris and Zelensky is expected to focus on the ongoing war.
The upcoming US elections, set to take place in November, have added a layer of uncertainty to the situation. While President Joe Biden has pledged continued support for Ukraine, potential changes in US policy towards the war remain a concern for Zelensky.
In a separate development, former President Donald Trump announced that he will “probably” meet with Zelensky when the Ukrainian president travels to the US next week. Trump spoke with Zelensky on the phone in July, but a meeting between the two leaders would mark their first in-person interaction since Trump left office.
