At least four people have been killed and thousands left stranded in northern Thailand as Typhoon Yagi and the monsoon rains unleashed severe flooding in the region, Bloomberg reports.

The disaster has affected some 9,000 households, primarily in the provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, according to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Government agencies are mobilizing to provide immediate assistance to those affected.

Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to hit Asia this year, has also caused devastation in neighboring Vietnam, resulting in at least 152 deaths and 140 missing.

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning of more torrential rain expected from September 13 to early next week, raising concerns about potential flash floods and landslides.

The third quarter typically marks monsoon season in Thailand. Since August 16, floods across the country have claimed the lives of 26 people and impacted over 83,000 households, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Rescue efforts are underway to reach stranded residents and provide essential aid. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
