Trump, Harris Argue Over Economic Plans in Presidential Debate
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris exchanged insults while outlining their respective economic plans for the nation in a presidential debate hosted by ABC News.
Harris described her vision for an “opportunity economy,” promising tax breaks for American families with children, offering $6,000 in tax relief, and $50,000 in relief for small businesses. She denounced Trump’s economic policies, accusing him of favoring the wealthy.
“My opponent has a plan that I call the ‘Trump sales tax,’ which would be a 20% tax on everyday goods that you rely on to get through the month,” she said.
Harris added, Trump’s economic policies would increase expenses for middle-class families by $4,000 per year.
Trump countered by denying any plans for a sales tax, stating that he would implement tariffs on certain goods.
“Other countries are going to finally, after 75 years, pay us back for all that we’ve done for the world, and the tariff will be substantial,” he said, adding that his administration had taken in “billions and billions of dollars” from China.
Trump also pointed out that the Biden-Harris administration has kept in place most of the tariffs he imposed on China.
The candidates also traded barbs regarding the state of the US economy, with Trump blaming Democrats for rising inflation and Harris accusing the former president of presiding over “the greatest unemployment since the Great Depression.”
