In a recent phone call, US President Joe Biden praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “message of peace” and ongoing “humanitarian support” during Modi’s historic visit to Ukraine.

The call, initiated by President Biden, took place on Monday and came just days after Modi’s high-profile trip to Kyiv, where he urged dialogue and diplomacy to end the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

During their discussion, Biden commended Modi for his diplomatic efforts and the significance of his visit, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since its independence in 1991. Modi’s visit was seen as a strong message for peaceful resolution, with India offering to play an “active role” in facilitating dialogue between the warring nations.

“I spoke with Prime Minister Modi to discuss his recent trip to Poland and Ukraine, and commended him for his message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine,” Biden said on X.

He also outlined the United States and India’s ongoing commitment to working together for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

The White House readout of the conversation stressed Biden’s appreciation for Modi’s contributions and the two leaders’ shared vision for resolving the Ukraine conflict through international law and in accordance with the UN Charter. The discussion also touched upon their collaboration in regional groups like the Quad, aimed at ensuring stability and development in the Indo-Pacific.

Modi, in his own post on X, said that he had a detailed exchange with Biden on regional and global issues, including Ukraine, and reiterated India’s full support for an early return to peace and stability. The conversation also covered recent political developments in Bangladesh, with both leaders expressing concern and emphasizing the need for safety and security for all communities.
