Pentagon: Russia-Iran Partnership Deepening, Raising Concerns

The US Department of Defense is concerned by a deepening cooperation between Russia and Iran, Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh told a press conference.

“So I can’t speculate on, you know, on that visit, I would say that I think, separately, we’ve seen a deepening cooperation and relationship between Russia and Iran as Russia continues to, engage in its unlawful war in Ukraine,” Singh said when asked by a journalist of the meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeskhian and Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met in Tehran on August 5.

The Pentagon is closely monitoring the interaction between the states, particularly concerning reports of Russia providing missile support to Iran, Singh went on.

In response to the increasing collaboration between Moscow and Tehran, Washington has bolstered its military presence in the Middle East, deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region, where fears of an Iranian retaliation have been growing since the killing of a senior Hamas leader in Tehran in late July.

The Pentagon has not disclosed the specific locations of these additional US defense assets.
