At least 28 people, including children, were injured Thursday morning when a car drove into a union demonstration in central Munich. Bavarian Governor Markus Söder described the incident as a “suspected attack,” The Associated Press reports.

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. in a square near downtown Munich, where members of the service workers’ union ver.di were holding a demonstration. According to police reports, a car drove into the back of the crowd.

Images from the scene showed a damaged Mini at the center of the incident, surrounded by debris, including discarded shoes.

Police have identified the suspect as a 24-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker. Authorities confirmed that at least 28 people sustained injuries. The extent of their injuries has not yet been released.

The incident comes as Munich prepares to host the annual Munich Security Conference, a three-day gathering of international foreign and security policy officials set to begin on Friday.
