In challenging and uncertain times, adopting a playful mindset can help build resilience and improve coping skills, according to a recent study from Oregon State University.
The concept, called “lemonading,” is inspired by the old adage:
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
It refers to the ability to generate positive experiences even in difficult circumstances.
Study author Xiangyou “Sharon” Shen and her colleagues surveyed 503 US adults in early 2021 during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants answered questions about their stress levels, future outlook, social support, and playful tendencies.
The findings, published in Frontiers in Psychology, revealed that highly playful individuals were more optimistic about the future and better at navigating difficulties — even as they remained realistic about risks and challenges.
“Highly playful people actively altered challenging situations, found creative substitutes for what was lost, viewed obstacles as opportunities, and maintained a sense of control over their responses,” Shen noted.
These individuals were more joyful and immersed in their daily lives despite facing similar vulnerabilities as their less playful counterparts.
Playfulness can counteract the effects of chronic stress, which is linked to various health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, noted that humor, love, and positive emotions increase levels of oxytocin in the brain — the “happy hormone” that lowers stress and improves overall health.
“It’s impossible to feel both positive and negative emotions at the same time, and the former emotions are much healthier,” Siegel said.
According to Shen and other experts, anyone can cultivate a playful mindset by:
- Seeking joy: Participate in activities that spark curiosity and happiness.
- Being open to new experiences: Try new ways of doing routine tasks.
- Scheduling unstructured time: Allow room for spontaneity.
- Connecting with lighthearted people: Spend time with those who make you laugh.
- Embracing humor: Don’t shy away from moments of silliness.
- Daily playtime: Dedicate five to ten minutes each day for playful activities.
Importantly, Shen emphasized focusing on the quality of engagement rather than simply going through the motions.
While playfulness may not change external circumstances, it can change how people experience and respond to them. Shen described it as a “safe space” for creative problem-solving and positive engagement. Even small doses of play can make a meaningful difference.
“Playfulness doesn’t distort reality — it enhances it,” Shen concluded.
Whether through laughter, curiosity, or creative thinking, “lemonading” offers a simple yet powerful way to navigate life’s inevitable challenges.
