A shooting at an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden, on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of around 10 people, including the suspected gunman, The Associated Press reports, citing Swedish police.
However, due to the extensive damage at the crime scene, a final death toll and precise number of wounded have yet to be determined.
The incident occurred at Campus Risbergska, a school that caters to students over the age of 20, located on the outskirts of Örebro, about 125 miles west of Stockholm. The school offers a range of programs, including primary and upper secondary school courses, Swedish classes for immigrants, vocational training, and programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Police believe the perpetrator acted alone and was not previously known to law enforcement. Officials stated there are no suspected connections to terrorism at this point in the investigation and that there were no warning signs prior to the attack.
The shooting erupted after many students had left the campus following a national exam. A large police presence, including numerous vehicles and ambulances with flashing lights, descended upon the school, with a helicopter circling overhead.
Teacher Lena Warenmark told SVT News that there were unusually few students on campus Tuesday afternoon due to the exam. She also reported hearing approximately 10 gunshots.
Students sheltered in nearby buildings, while other parts of the school were evacuated following the shooting, which began around 12:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT).
Gun violence at schools is rare in Sweden, though there have been several incidents in recent years involving other weapons, such as knives or axes.
