On January 31, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wyoming State Office announced the opening of a 30-day public scoping period to gather input regarding a potential oil and gas lease sale scheduled for September 2025, Sheridan Media reports.

The sale could include 38 parcels totaling 46,118 acres in Wyoming. The public comment period is set to close on March 3, 2025.

The BLM states that leasing is the first step in the process of developing federal oil and gas resources. However, before any development operations can commence, an operator must apply for a permit to drill. This application must outline detailed development plans, which are then reviewed by the BLM. The BLM posts the applications for public review, conducts environmental assessments, and coordinates with state partners and other stakeholders.

To ensure the protection of natural resources, all parcels included in federal oil and gas lease sales are subject to specific stipulations. For more information about current and upcoming lease sales, the public can access the National Fluid Lease Sale System.

Maps, additional details on the parcels under consideration, and instructions for submitting comments are available on the BLM’s ePlanning website at: BLM ePlanning Website.
