In a decisive move reflecting the new leadership of the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made the decision to remove the security detail and suspend the security clearance of retired General Mark A. Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

This action is part of a broader review into Milley’s actions while serving in the pivotal role during President Donald Trump’s first term. The Pentagon has also ordered an inspector general inquiry to assess whether Milley’s conduct during his tenure warrants a reduction in rank, even in retirement.

This review follows years of strained relations between Milley and President Trump, especially after the general’s efforts to distance himself from political interference in military affairs. Milley, who served from 2019 to 2023, had previously sparked controversy when he criticized Trump’s handling of civil unrest in 2020 and made independent calls to his Chinese counterparts at the close of the Trump administration. While Trump viewed these actions as undermining his leadership, Milley maintained that these calls were routine and aimed at avoiding miscommunications that could escalate tensions.

The decision to strip Milley of his security detail, along with the inquiry into his conduct, is seen by Pentagon officials as a necessary step in restoring accountability and reinforcing the chain of command within the US military. Joe Kasper, Hegseth’s chief of staff, emphasized that undermining the military’s leadership structure is detrimental to national security, a viewpoint that aligns with the broader vision of strengthening military integrity under the new administration.

These actions also come amidst ongoing discussions regarding the balance of power within the Pentagon and the potential for political influence. Critics have raised concerns that the investigation may further politicize military leadership, while supporters of Trump’s approach argue that it is essential for restoring discipline and ensuring that military officers prioritize the Constitution above all else.

Despite the controversy surrounding his actions, Milley’s legacy remains a subject of debate. He was initially appointed by Trump due to his distinguished military career but became a polarizing figure as his tenure progressed. His public statements, such as the remark that the military takes an oath to the Constitution—not a leader—highlight his commitment to maintaining the military’s apolitical stance, even if it meant clashing with the president.
