Central Wyoming Regional Airport achieved a significant milestone in 2024, recording 21,704 departing commercial passengers—the highest number in over 25 years, County 10 reports.

This figure surpasses the previous peak of 16,847 set in 2008, highlighting the airport’s growing role in connecting rural Wyoming to the national transportation network.

The return of twice-daily round-trip flights by SkyWest Airlines, operating as United Express, played a pivotal role in achieving this record. These flights resumed on June 1, 2024, after a two-year reduction to a single daily round-trip due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This expanded service provided greater flexibility for travelers, fostering increased utilization.

“Having the right service made this achievement possible,” said Missy White, a longtime member of the Fremont Air Service Team.

She emphasized the importance of SkyWest Airlines’ connection to Denver International Airport, which links passengers to over 180 destinations worldwide.

The airport’s success is also attributed to the support of Fremont County residents, local governments, and the State of Wyoming. Funding from the Optional ½% Excise Tax for Economic Development has been instrumental in securing the airport’s financial stability and growth. This tax, set to expire in March 2025, has underpinned the minimum revenue guarantees essential for maintaining commercial air service.

The airport’s role extends beyond transportation convenience. It has become a vital resource for the local business community, enabling travel for sales meetings, educational conferences, and medical visits.

“It’s clear there is a market for commercial air service in Fremont County,” said Riverton City Administrator Kyle Butterfield. “The right air service partner, the right schedule, and the right number of flights have brought that market to life—improving the quality of life for our residents and economic development opportunities for our businesses.”

In 2015, projections suggesting the airport could reach 20,000 to 25,000 annual enplanements were met with skepticism. At the time, the ten-year average hovered just above 13,000. However, the 2024 figures validate the foresight and efforts of airport management and community stakeholders.

Formerly known as Riverton Regional Airport, Central Wyoming Regional Airport is located three miles northwest of Riverton in Fremont County. It covers 1,250 acres and features two asphalt runways. In addition to supporting general aviation, it serves as Fremont County’s sole commercial service airport, with daily flights to Denver International Airport operated by United Express (SkyWest Airlines).

The airport’s growth underscores the importance of collaboration between local stakeholders and air service providers in enhancing connectivity for rural communities.
