US flags at President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach are now flying at full height, despite a national directive for flags to remain at half-staff through the end of January in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, The Associated Press reports.
The large flag on Trump’s property was initially lowered to half-staff, as per protocol, but has been raised in the days following Carter’s burial on Thursday in Plains, Georgia.
Both President Joe Biden and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Democrat and Republican, respectively, had ordered US flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days from the date of Carter’s death, through January 28, to honor the 39th president’s life and service.
Trump has reportedly expressed frustration that flags would be at half-staff on January 20, when he is set to take the oath of office for his second term. While he was a vocal critic of Carter during his presidential campaign, Trump issued a statement of praise for the former president after his passing at age 100.
In a related move, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, ordered flags at all state buildings in Texas to be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day.
“While we honor the service of a former President, we must also celebrate the service of an incoming President and the bright future ahead for the United States of America,” Abbott said in a statement.
Trump did pay his respects to Carter, attending both the casket viewing in the Capitol Rotunda and Carter’s state funeral service in Washington, D.C., last week.
