World-Famous Crocodile, “Crocodile Dundee” Star Burt, Dies at 90+
Burt, the formidable saltwater crocodile known for his cameo appearance in the iconic 1986 film “Crocodile Dundee” and his fiery personality, has died, The Associated Press reports.
The Crocosaurus Cove reptile aquarium in Darwin, where Burt had resided since 2008, announced his passing over the weekend. He was believed to be at least 90 years old.
Burt, estimated to be over 16 feet long, was captured in the Reynolds River in the 1980s and quickly became a well-known figure in the world of reptiles. The aquarium described him in social media posts as an “independent” and “confirmed bachelor,” recounting his strong-willed nature from his early years at a crocodile farm.
Burt rose to international fame through a brief but memorable appearance in “Crocodile Dundee,” starring Paul Hogan. In the scene, American journalist Sue Charlton, played by Linda Kozlowski, is attacked by a crocodile at a watering hole before being rescued by Mick Dundee. While Burt was featured lunging from the water, the crocodile shown in close-up during the attack was reportedly an American alligator, a detail noted by the Internet Movie Database.
Crocosaurus Cove, home to the nation’s only crocodile dive attraction known as the “Cage of Death,” said they plan to honor Burt’s legacy with a commemorative sign. The sign will celebrate “his extraordinary life and the stories and interactions he shared throughout his time at the park.”
