Teton Pass reopened to traffic in both directions at 4:36 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, following a temporary closure due to winter weather conditions and a multi-vehicle collision earlier in the day, Buckrail reports.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has kept Chain Law Level 1 in effect, advising drivers to use caution while traveling in the area.
The pass was initially closed at 2:18 p.m. after a collision involving multiple vehicles on the east side of Teton Pass near milepost 11. According to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), the crash occurred around 1:40 p.m. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, treating the incident as one involving injuries. However, details about the number of vehicles involved and the extent of injuries remain unconfirmed. Some reports suggested as many as six vehicles were part of the collision.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol is handling the investigation, and WYDOT issued an alert at 2:04 p.m. announcing Chain Law Level 1 due to hazardous driving conditions.
The reopening of Teton Pass comes with continued precautions for drivers. Under Chain Law Level 1, commercial vehicles are required to have chains on at least one axle, and all motorists are encouraged to drive carefully given the lingering winter conditions.
Drivers are urged to stay updated on road conditions through WYDOT’s alerts and to prepare for sudden weather changes, which are common in the region.
Authorities remind travelers to exercise caution on Teton Pass, particularly during winter weather, when icy roads and reduced visibility can create dangerous situations. Travelers are encouraged to equip their vehicles appropriately and follow all traffic advisories to ensure their safety and that of others on the road.
