Poland has recalled its ambassador to Hungary for consultations and threatened legal action against Budapest after Hungary granted political asylum to a Polish lawmaker wanted on fraud charges, Bloomberg reports.

The Polish Foreign Ministry announced Friday that it would summon Hungary’s ambassador to Warsaw following Hungary’s decision to grant asylum to former Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski. Romanowski is wanted in Poland on allegations of fraud committed during the previous nationalist government.

The Polish government accuses Hungary of neglecting its obligations under the EU’s extradition framework. The ministry’s statement strongly condemned Hungary’s actions and warned that if Budapest refuses to extradite Romanowski, Poland will refer the matter to the European Commission, seeking action before the European Court of Justice.

The move escalates tensions between the two Visegrád Group allies, who have previously clashed over issues of rule of law and judicial independence within the European Union.
