Stanley, the popular maker of outdoor and everyday drinkware, is recalling 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs due to a risk of burns, CBS News reports.
The recall affects its Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, sold in various colors and sizes (12, 16, and 20 ounces) and featuring a polypropylene lid. The mugs, identifiable by the Stanley winged bear logo, have been linked to 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two in the US, after reports of lids detaching during use.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall Thursday, saying that heat and torque can cause the lid threads to shrink, leading to detachment and potential scalding. The CPSC received 16 complaints from US consumers, with two reporting burn injuries. A total of 91 incidents were reported globally.
These mugs, manufactured in China, were sold at major retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target, both online and in stores nationwide, from June 2016 to December 2024. Prices ranged from $20 to $50.
Stanley is offering free replacement lids. This recall follows earlier lawsuits alleging Stanley failed to disclose the use of lead in the manufacturing process.
