Hegseth’s Defense Secretary Bid Gains Momentum After Key Meeting, Trump’s Endorsement
Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, is facing a critical moment in his confirmation process, navigating allegations of sexual misconduct and other controversies. However, a key meeting and a public endorsement from Trump appear to bolster his chances, Bloomberg reports.
Hegseth, a decorated Army veteran and former Fox News host, met with Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) on Monday. Ernst, a prominent figure considered a potential alternative candidate for the position, released a statement following the meeting, calling their conversation “encouraging” and pledging her support for Hegseth throughout the confirmation process. While not explicitly endorsing his nomination, the statement offers significant encouragement.
Hegseth also plans meetings with Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) this week. Securing their support, given their moderate stances, would significantly strengthen his prospects for confirmation. President-elect Trump himself reportedly called Hegseth, urging him to “keep fighting” for the position, signifying continued backing despite the swirling controversies.
Hegseth’s candidacy has been marked by several allegations, including a 2017 rape accusation which he denies; a financial settlement was reached with the accuser, with Hegseth’s lawyer stating the encounter was consensual. Additionally, reports detail his resignation from two veterans advocacy groups amid allegations of intoxication on the job and inappropriate relationships with female staff. An NBC News report also raised concerns about Hegseth’s drinking habits during his time at Fox News.
Hegseth’s past public statements opposing women in combat have drawn criticism, particularly given Senator Ernst’s daughter serves in the Army. However, Ernst’s statement noted Hegseth’s commitment to a full Pentagon audit and selecting a senior official who will uphold the value of service members. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Hegseth can overcome these challenges and secure Senate confirmation. Other candidates considered by Trump’s team include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
