A new poll reveals widespread dissatisfaction with French President Emmanuel Macron, with a majority of French citizens favoring his resignation and an early presidential election, Bloomberg reports.
According to a Cluster17 poll for Le Point magazine, conducted between the proposal of a censure motion on Monday and the subsequent fall of Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government on Wednesday, 54% of respondents believe Macron should step down.
The poll’s findings come in the wake of the government’s defeat in a no-confidence vote, prompting calls from some opposition lawmakers for the president’s resignation. Despite this pressure, Macron has reiterated his intention to serve his full second term, which ends in 2027.
The no-confidence vote, which ultimately brought down Barnier’s government, was significantly bolstered by votes from the far-right National Rally party led by Marine Le Pen. Interestingly, Le Pen has avoided explicitly calling for Macron’s resignation, stating on Wednesday that the decision rests solely with the president and his conscience.
