Western Europe is bracing for a significant temperature drop next week, with forecasts predicting near-freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall in the Alps, posing an early test for the region’s energy infrastructure, Bloomberg reports.
Parts of Germany and Scotland are already under snow and ice warnings on Wednesday, following a brief milder period. However, a much colder spell is expected to arrive by Sunday, driven by a low-pressure system moving in from the Bay of Biscay, according to weather forecaster Maxar Technologies Inc.
This system will bring heavy rain showers to France, and snowfall to Germany and the Alps, Maxar reported. Some ski resorts in the western Alps, including the popular destinations of Chamonix (France) and Verbier (Switzerland), are expected to receive up to a meter of fresh snow over the coming week.
The plummeting temperatures are expected to significantly impact the UK and France, putting pressure on energy supplies as demand increases.
