Rock Springs authorities are cautioning residents to stay vigilant when searching for rental properties after several individuals fell victim to a scam involving fake real estate listings, KGAB AM 650 reports.

According to the Rock Springs Police Department, the scam surfaced on Facebook Marketplace, with listings falsely attributed to a company called “Southwest Real Estate.” While there is a legitimate business by that name in Rock Springs, police have confirmed the actual company has no connection to these fraudulent activities.

Victims reported being directed to use an app called “Rently” to access a code for viewing the property. After agreeing to rent, they were instructed to send their deposit and first month’s rent via Walmart wire transfer.

Once payments were sent, the scam listings disappeared, and victims were unable to contact the supposed agent. Unfortunately, in such cases, recovering the lost funds is highly unlikely.

This isn’t the first instance of such a scam in Wyoming or neighboring areas. Nearly identical schemes have been reported in Albany County, as well as in Fort Collins, Colorado. About a year ago, Rock Springs experienced a similar scam also falsely tied to “Southwest Real Estate.” Police believe many additional cases likely go unreported due to victims’ embarrassment.

Police urge caution when conducting financial transactions, particularly those involving contracts. Experts advise renters to physically visit a property before signing agreements or making payments.

The Rock Springs Police Department encourages anyone who encounters suspicious rental listings or believes they may have been scammed to report the incident promptly.
