The Wyoming Highway Patrol has identified the truck driver killed in a tragic pileup on Interstate 80 west of Cheyenne early Saturday morning, KGAB AM 650 reports.

The crash, which occurred around 3:05 a.m. near milepost 341, claimed the life of 53-year-old HE Chen, a trucker navigating dangerous winter conditions.

The incident unfolded as a 2024 Freightliner, attempting to slow down to avoid disabled vehicles in the eastbound lanes, jackknifed and became stuck, blocking both lanes. Shortly thereafter, Chen, driving a 2022 Volvo semi, was unable to slow down in time due to the icy, snowy conditions. His truck collided with the trailer of the Freightliner, resulting in the fatal crash.

According to Trooper Shawncey Day, Chen was wearing his seatbelt at the time, but the impact was too severe for him to survive.

Chen’s passenger, a resident of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center with minor injuries and later released. The Freightliner driver was not injured in the crash.

As Wyomingites grapple with the harsh winter conditions that make travel treacherous, this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks truck drivers face daily to keep goods moving across the country. I-80, a major transportation artery, is notorious for its unpredictable weather and heavy commercial traffic, particularly during winter storms.

While the investigation into the crash continues, Wyoming residents and officials are rallying around the tragedy as a call to prioritize safety on the roads.

Chen’s death is a stark reminder of the challenges and dangers faced by those in the trucking industry. These professionals often risk their lives in difficult weather to ensure vital supplies reach their destinations.

This incident also underscores the importance of adhering to safe driving speeds in hazardous conditions, a lesson Wyomingites know all too well given the state’s rugged terrain and volatile weather.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and has urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution during adverse weather. The pileup also led to the temporary closure of I-80, further highlighting the ripple effects of such accidents on transportation and commerce.

As Wyoming mourns the loss of HE Chen, the tragedy emphasizes the collective responsibility of all drivers to prioritize safety, especially during Wyoming’s challenging winter months. Wyoming stands in solidarity with the trucking community, honoring Chen’s life and recognizing the sacrifices made by drivers who brave the state’s roads.
