President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks are sending a clear message: his administration will take a hard line on China, prioritizing national security and trade concerns over cooperation, Al Jazeera reports.

Trump has nominated a team known for their hawkish views on China, including:

John Ratcliffe for Director of Central Intelligence (CIA), the former Director of National Intelligence under Trump.

Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, a Fox News host and Army veteran with no prior government experience.

Michael Waltz for National Security Advisor, a Florida Congressman.

Elise Stefanik for United Nations Ambassador, a New York congresswoman.

Marco Rubio is widely expected to be nominated for Secretary of State, the most senior diplomat.

All those picked have expressed concerns about China’s growing power and have advocated for a tougher stance towards Beijing, particularly in the areas of trade and national security.

Trade War 2.0?

Former US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is expected to become Trump’s “trade czar.” Lighthizer was instrumental in crafting tariffs on $380 billion worth of Chinese goods during Trump’s first term, and his appointment signals a potential escalation of the trade war. Lighthizer has called for “decoupling” from China by limiting trade and restricting exports of critical technology.

Tensions in Asia

The prospect of a Trump administration dominated by China hawks coincides with rising tensions between China and Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.

Admiral Philip Davidson, former head of US Indo-Pacific Command, has warned that China could be capable of invading Taiwan by 2027, potentially during Trump’s second term.

Musk: A Lone Voice of Reason?

While most of Trump’s picks are known for their anti-China stance, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stands out for his relatively positive view of China. Musk has extensive business interests in the country and has met with top Chinese officials on numerous occasions.

His position, however, has drawn criticism from human rights advocates and US lawmakers, including Rubio, over his business dealings with China, including opening a showroom in Xinjiang, where Beijing is accused of human rights abuses.

Concerns from Allies

Trump’s choice of Stefanik for UN ambassador has raised concerns from some of Washington’s Asian allies. Stefanik has been critical of China and has called for a reevaluation of US funding for the UN. Some analysts believe her appointment could lead to friction with US allies who support the organization.

President Known for Turnover

Experts warn that, despite Trump’s strong stance on China, his cabinet may not remain stable for the duration of his second term. His first administration was marked by high turnover, with frequent changes in key positions.

Overall, Trump’s cabinet choices paint a picture of a potential second term focused on confrontation with China, potentially leading to heightened tensions across the globe.
