Donald Trump declared victory in the early hours of Wednesday morning, claiming victory in key swing states including Pennsylvania, NBC News reports.

As vote totals in battleground states suggested a tightening race, a palpable shift in mood became evident amongst Harris’ campaign aides, supporters, and Democratic officials.

While no state had yet flipped from one party to the other as of midnight, Trump was winning states like Kentucky and Indiana, while Harris was winning Vermont and Massachusetts. Trump also won Florida, a state that has steadily shifted to the right in recent election cycles. Harris secured a win in Virginia.

The outcome of the House races remained unclear, with narrow margins, a series of West Coast races, and the potential for slow vote-counting suggesting that a call on which party would win the majority could take some time.

The two presidential candidates’ supporters split over the main issues facing the country on Election Day, with most Harris voters rating democracy as their top issue, while most Trump voters said the economy mattered most to them.

Both candidates and their campaigns expressed confidence in the closing days that they were on track to win.
