The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has appointed Melissa MacDonald as its new executive director, marking an exciting transition during the organization’s 75th anniversary season, Oil City News reports.

MacDonald, a recent arrival to Casper from Newport, Oregon, steps into the role following Rebecca Hebert’s decision to step down and spend more time with her family.

MacDonald brings a rich background in both symphony and theater management to her new position. She studied theater, with a minor in music and folklore, and served as the relationship manager at the Newport Symphony Orchestra. Her connection to the arts runs deep, shaped by a childhood spent performing alongside her father, a professional musician who toured the United States after relocating from the UK.

Casper’s arts scene quickly captured MacDonald’s interest. She was initially drawn to the WSO after hearing about the celebrated “Pops in the Park” event. Intrigued by the orchestra’s reputation, she looked into ways to get involved and applied for a position as development director. However, with Hebert preparing to transition out, the WSO’s executive committee proposed that MacDonald take on the executive director role instead.

The WSO’s board members and Hebert view MacDonald’s selection as a good fit for the future of the organization. Hebert, who looks back fondly on her years with the orchestra, plans to remain active in Casper’s arts community, teaching dance and attending symphony events as a supporter. She expressed confidence in MacDonald’s leadership, citing her commitment to Casper’s arts culture and her enthusiasm for community engagement.

MacDonald sees this opportunity as an exciting next chapter in her career.

“I’m thoroughly invested in the culture and the musical community here… The WSO offers programs that aren’t available everywhere, and I’m looking forward to being as involved as possible,” she said.

Alongside MacDonald’s arrival, this season also marks the final year for WSO’s music director Christopher Dragon.
