Peanut the Squirrel, a seven-year-old gray squirrel known for his internet fame, has been euthanized following his seizure by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), New York Post reports.
The decision to euthanize Peanut, along with a raccoon named Fred, was made to test the animals for rabies, according to a statement from the agency.
Peanut, affectionately referred to as “P’Nut” on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, had captured the hearts of many with his charming personality. Mark Longo, Peanut’s guardian, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing his grief and gratitude for the joy Peanut brought into his life.
“RIP MY BEST FRIEND. Thank you for the best 7 years of my life. Thank you for bringing so much joy to us and the world. I’m sorry I failed you but thank you for everything,” Longo wrote, alongside a video memorial.
Longo is also seeking financial assistance for a “legal battle” and for his non-profit organization, P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, which he established after rescuing Peanut. The DEC reported that Peanut exhibited aggressive behavior during the seizure, biting one of the investigators. Consequently, both animals were euthanized for testing due to concerns regarding rabies, prompting the DEC to advise anyone who had contact with them to consult a physician.
Peanut was rescued by Longo after he witnessed the squirrel’s mother being struck by a car. The connection between Longo and Peanut led him to relocate to upstate New York and create the animal sanctuary. The seizure occurred after the DEC received multiple anonymous complaints regarding wild animals in Longo’s home, particularly concerning Fred the raccoon.
In response to the situation, Longo expressed his frustrations on social media, criticizing those who reported him to the DEC. The agency’s actions were taken in accordance with their responsibilities regarding rabies vector species, as noted in their statement.
