Early voting turnout in Wyoming has surged to record-breaking levels, far outpacing the state’s primary election turnout, particularly in key counties like Laramie and Campbell, Oil City News reports.
Voters are turning out in unprecedented numbers, with over 7,000 early in-person voters reported in Laramie County by Monday—a remarkable figure when compared to the 18,554 total primary ballots cast. County Clerk Debra Lee praised the turnout, calling it “phenomenal.”
Campbell County has seen similarly robust participation. Election Coordinator Michelle Leiker noted the high turnout compared to August’s primary, attributing some of the delay at polling stations to voters needing to re-register after not participating in recent elections. Campbell County’s voter registration climbed from 12,000 to 15,000 this fall, with a goal to reach the 20,000 mark seen in the 2020 election.
In Sheridan and Albany counties, the re-registration process has posed challenges as well, though officials are pleased with the overall turnout. Election Supervisor James Temple noted that while the process has been busy, the election team has managed well and is optimistic about the election’s smooth continuation. Early voters in Albany County have seen wait times averaging around 20 to 30 minutes, underscoring the enthusiasm and engagement among Wyoming residents.
Absentee ballots are also proving popular in counties like Fremont, where absentee numbers are on track to exceed 2016 figures. County Clerk Julie Freese reminded voters to submit absentee ballots promptly, noting the US Postal Service’s recommendation to mail ballots at least seven days before Election Day to ensure timely arrival.
In Natrona County, a slower initial turnout has picked up, with daily early voter counts expected to reach 800 as Election Day approaches. County Clerk Tracy Good expressed confidence that the pace will continue to accelerate, with robust planning for election judges and volunteers.
Wyoming voters are encouraged to review their ballots and voting locations before heading to the polls to ensure an efficient voting process. The Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office has also introduced an online polling place locator for voter convenience. With high early voting numbers and a motivated electorate, Wyoming’s general election turnout appears poised to set new records in civic participation.
