China has issued a strong condemnation of the latest US arms sale to Taiwan, vowing to take “all necessary measures” to defend its sovereignty over the self-ruled island it claims as its own, Al Jazeera reports.

The US State Department on Friday approved a $2 billion package for Taiwan, including advanced surface-to-air missile systems and radar, as part of its ongoing efforts to counter China’s growing military presence in the Asia Pacific region. The deal, awaiting Congressional approval, will draw from US Air Force stockpiles.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry expressed gratitude for the sale, stating it would strengthen their defense capabilities and contribute to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

However, Beijing responded swiftly and fiercely. In a statement on Saturday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry labeled the arms sale a “serious violation” of China’s sovereignty and security interests. They accused the US of damaging China-US relations and endangering peace in the Taiwan Strait, vowing to lodge formal protests with Washington.

The ministry emphasized that China will take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. This declaration echoes previous warnings that Beijing will not rule out the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

China has been increasingly assertive towards Taiwan in recent months, conducting frequent military exercises near the island and deploying fighter jets, drones, and warships in the region. This month saw a record 153 Chinese aircraft detected around Taiwan in a single day.

Beijing maintains a steadfast “One China” policy, refusing to acknowledge Taiwan’s self-governance and viewing it as a breakaway province. The US, while not formally recognizing Taiwan’s independence, remains a key partner and weapons supplier, providing critical support to Taipei’s defense.
