Exploring the Hidden Gems of Southeast Wyoming
While Wyoming is often associated with the grandeur of Yellowstone National Park and the luxury of Jackson Hole, the southeastern region of the state offers visitors a rich blend of history, wildlife, and outdoor adventure that is equally captivating, Forbes reports.
In September, I had the opportunity to explore this lesser-known part of the Cowboy State, a region filled with unique experiences.
The journey began by flying into Denver and making the scenic two-hour drive to Cheyenne. In the surrounding area, Terry Bison Ranch provided an authentic Western experience, complete with a quirky “homemade train” ride that brought us up close to a herd of bison, including a memorable one affectionately named “Gene Simmons” for its impressive tongue. The ranch, a hub for wildlife, also introduced us to ostriches, peacocks, and playful prairie dogs.
Southeastern Wyoming offers far more than just ranches, with stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. While four-wheeling through the breathtaking Medicine Bow National Forest, we encountered moose, mountain goats, and deer. Hunting, an integral part of Wyoming’s relationship with the land, is also prominent. Locals like Ron Rabou, a fifth-generation organic wheat farmer, and Haley Fitzgerald, an artisan and huntress, embody the state’s deep-rooted outdoor traditions.
The Snowy Range Scenic Byway, one of the region’s must-see routes, takes visitors on a breathtaking drive through Medicine Bow National Forest, offering panoramic views from over 10,800 feet above sea level. Along the way, stops like the Libby Flats Observation Area and Lake Marie provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife spotting.
For those seeking more immersive experiences, lodges and dude ranches such as Albany Lodge and Vee Bar Guest Ranch offer activities like horseback riding, off-roading, fishing, and hiking. These ranches provide a unique opportunity to live the cowboy lifestyle, with activities like cattle herding available for visitors.
Southeast Wyoming also offers historical attractions, including the Wyoming Territorial Prison in Laramie. Built in 1872, the prison housed infamous outlaws like Butch Cassidy and provides insight into life in the Old West.
From the rugged beauty of Medicine Bow to the rich history of Laramie, Southeast Wyoming is an ideal destination for those looking to experience the quieter, yet equally fascinating, side of the Cowboy State. Whether you’re exploring its vast landscapes or diving into its frontier past, this region leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
