The Paris Motor Show has opened its doors to global automakers eager to showcase their latest models and futuristic concepts, as the event runs from Monday through Sunday, CNBC reports.
This year’s exhibition comes at a pivotal moment for Europe’s car industry, which is facing challenges on the road to full electrification, including slowing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and fierce competition from foreign markets, especially China.
The biennial show is a major platform for automakers to reveal their most ambitious designs and technologies. Among the highlights is Peugeot’s Hypersquare steering wheel, which has generated buzz for its unique rectangular shape resembling a video game controller. The French carmaker announced that this innovative design will be in production by 2026 and aims to appeal to younger drivers. The Hypersquare was displayed in Peugeot’s futuristic Inception concept car, drawing attention from visitors, including French President Emmanuel Macron.
Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD made a splash by unveiling its Yangwang U8 SUV to the French market. The plug-in hybrid is equipped with advanced features, including the ability to “swim” for up to 30 minutes, park sideways, and turn in place thanks to four individual electric motors. BYD emphasized the life-saving potential of the U8’s floating capabilities in case of floods or accidents. The vehicle also includes a built-in drone on its roof, designed to help drivers navigate difficult terrain.
Renault took a nostalgic turn by introducing its R4, a small electric SUV inspired by the iconic Renault 4, designed to compete with budget EVs from Chinese competitors. Meanwhile, Volkswagen premiered its seven-seater Tayron SUV, available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, as the company continues to expand its EV offerings despite economic challenges.
Stellantis, the parent company of brands like Jeep, Fiat, and Dodge, revealed two new models: the Citroën C4 and C4X, both available in hybrid, electric, and combustion-engine versions. Chinese automaker Xpeng also used the Paris Motor Show to debut its all-electric P7+, a car powered by its AI-driven “Turing chip” and designed for an era of autonomous mobility. Xpeng also displayed a flying car concept, underscoring its vision for the future of transportation.
