German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Istanbul on October 19 for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a German government spokesperson confirmed to Reuters.

The meeting will focus on a range of critical issues, including the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and migratio, according to the spokesperson.

The spokesperson also outlined the ongoing dialogue between Germany and Turkey regarding migration policy, particularly in the area of repatriation cooperation.

The meeting comes at a time of heightened global tensions, with the war in Ukraine continuing and the recent escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East. Turkey’s role as a key regional player, mediating between Russia and Ukraine and hosting a large number of refugees, makes the discussions with Scholz particularly significant.

The news of the meeting was initially reported by Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu news agency on Thursday, though no details regarding the content of the talks were provided at that time.
