Authorities are investigating a shooting incident in the northern Wyoming town of Byron, where multiple individuals were shot, including at least one fatality, on Monday afternoon.

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired at a residence on the south side of Byron at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers, including deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, Wyoming Highway Patrol, and Lovell Police Department, secured the residence and found several victims inside. Some individuals had sustained fatal injuries, while others were alive but wounded. The victims, whose identities have not been disclosed, were transported by ambulance to North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell for emergency treatment.

Sheriff Ken Blackburn stated that the incident is being treated as a crime scene, and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has been called to assist in processing the scene. However, he emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety in Big Horn County.

The small town of Byron, with a population of around 600 residents, is located roughly 12 miles southwest of Lovell. Law enforcement agencies have urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors about the incident, including false claims about officers firing weapons at the scene, and to await official updates as the investigation continues.

Blackburn extended his condolences, saying:

“Our hearts and prayers go out to all those who have been affected by this tragedy.”

This remains an ongoing investigation, and further details are expected as the authorities continue to gather information.
