Severe winds swept across Wyoming yesterday, causing significant disruptions, including a semi-truck rollover near Wheatland and a downed tree in Casper, K2 Radio reports.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) shared photos on social media, highlighting the impact of 68 mph gusts on I-25 near Coleman around 1:00 p.m.
“This just happened…” WYDOT wrote.
The Department warned drivers of temporary closures and urging caution during the high-wind event.
While Wyoming truckers often contend with icy and snowy conditions, strong winds are equally hazardous. Gusts above 40 mph can pose serious dangers, while those exceeding 60 mph are capable of flipping semi-trucks, as demonstrated by the Wheatland incident.
WYDOT reported several significant gusts throughout the region:
- WYO 258: 52 mph near McKinley Street
- U.S. 20/26: 57 mph at Natrona
- I-25: 58 mph gusts at Deer Creek and 52 mph at Bordeaux
- WYO 220: 62 mph at Pathfinder Hill
Authorities continue to monitor conditions and remind drivers to remain cautious on roadways prone to high wind events.
