A United Airlines employee was critically injured Saturday evening after an aircraft tug vehicle he was driving collided with an American Airlines plane at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
The incident occurred as American Eagle Flight 6181, operated by Air Wisconsin, was taxiing to the gate after landing from Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport in Michigan.
The plane’s wing struck the tug vehicle, flipping it over and trapping the 64-year-old driver inside. Emergency responders freed the man, who was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with head and lower-body injuries. He was initially in critical condition but has since been stabilized, according to the Chicago Police Department.
United Airlines confirmed the injured driver as one of its employees and stated:
“We are ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.”
American Airlines reported no injuries among the passengers or crew on board.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident,” the airline said in a statement.
Passengers were safely deplaned and transported by bus to their terminal.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the Bombardier CRJ-200 plane was taxiing when the collision occurred. Both the FAA and the Chicago Police Department are investigating the incident.
Despite the accident, the Chicago Department of Aviation reported no significant impact on airport operations.
