Former Vice President Mike Pence has publicly challenged his former boss, Donald Trump, on key policy issues, advocating for a ban on TikTok and the approval of a controversial steel acquisition – positions more aligned with traditional Republican principles, Bloomberg reports.

Pence’s remarks signal a continued effort to steer the Republican Party back towards a more established conservatism, a stark contrast to the “Make America Great Again” movement championed by Trump.

The relationship between Pence and Trump has been fractured since the 2020 election when Pence refused to overturn the results, a demand from Trump. Now, Pence says he intends to use “whatever remains of my bully pulpit” to champion “traditional conservatism.”

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Pence emphasized his support for the law requiring TikTok’s Chinese owners to divest from the platform or face a US ban, citing national security concerns. Despite a Supreme Court ruling upholding the law, Trump issued an executive order extending the deadline for a potential sale on his first day in office, a move Pence implicitly criticized.

Pence also took aim at Trump’s opposition to the acquisition of US Steel by Japan’s Nippon Steel Corp. Former President Joe Biden blocked the deal, citing national security and supply chain concerns. Pence refuted this argument, calling it “completely unfounded” given the strong alliance between the US and Japan.

Pence Emphasizes Traditional Conservatism

Pence’s renewed push for traditional Republican positions comes as he seeks to reassert his influence within the party. His criticism of Trump’s policies, particularly concerning TikTok and the steel deal, highlights the ongoing struggle within the GOP over its direction and identity.

Asia Trip Highlights China Tensions

Pence’s remarks followed his recent trip to Asia. During a business conference in Hong Kong, he called for the release of media mogul Jimmy Lai, a pro-democracy activist currently facing trial on charges of colluding with foreign governments. This drew strong condemnation from Chinese officials, further illustrating Pence’s willingness to take a hard line against Beijing.

While Trump’s “America First” policies often prioritize economic nationalism, Pence’s position reflects a more traditional Republican approach, emphasizing global business ties and national security through strategic alliances.
