The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams are preparing for an exciting weekend as they travel to Las Vegas to face UNLV in a two-day meet this Friday and Saturday, 7220 Sports reports.

The competition is set to begin with a 6 p.m. event on Friday, followed by a 11 a.m. session on Saturday.

Both the Wyoming Cowgirls and Cowboys are coming off victories earlier this week, having defeated Colorado School of Mines in their previous meet on Monday. The Cowgirls remain undefeated in dual action, boasting a perfect 7-0 record overall and a 3-0 mark in Mountain West Conference competition. A win against UNLV this weekend would not only keep their perfect season intact but also provide a significant confidence boost as the Mountain West Championships approach in February.

Head coach Dave Denniston highlighted the importance of the meet, noting that a victory over UNLV would give the Cowgirls valuable momentum.

“UNLV women have always been just ahead of us when it comes to conference championships,” Denniston said. “If we can get a win this weekend, it will give them confidence going into the championships, knowing they’re capable of beating UNLV. The Mountain West Conference is stacked this year, especially with the addition of Washington State. I think it’s going to be a very close meet, and we’re looking for any opportunity to build confidence in our races and our strategy.”

On the men’s side, the Cowboys are eager to compete against a WAC opponent for the first time this season, as their only conference dual meet so far was a win against Air Force in early November. Denniston is optimistic about the Cowboys’ chances, acknowledging UNLV’s depth but noting that Wyoming’s top swimmers could match up well in several events.

“UNLV continues to be the top favorite in the WAC for men,” he said. “We want to have a good showing and race-to-race against them. We’ll celebrate the victories when we can get them, but I think there will be some really close races.”

After the dual meet with UNLV, the Wyoming swim and dive teams will turn their focus to their next competition on January 31 against Utah in Green River, Wyoming, as part of a UW outreach event.
