The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams are gearing up for a two-day competition against UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada, this weekend, News Letter Journal reports.
The action will begin on Friday at 6 p.m., with events continuing Saturday at 11 a.m. Both the Cowgirls and Cowboys are coming off recent victories, having defeated Colorado School of Mines earlier this week.
The Cowgirls enter the meet with an impressive 7-0 record in dual competition, including a perfect 3-0 mark in Mountain West action. A victory over UNLV this weekend would not only extend their undefeated streak but also provide a significant boost ahead of the Mountain West Championships in February.
“We’ve always been just behind UNLV in terms of conference championships,” said head coach Dave Denniston. “A win this weekend would give the team the confidence to know they can beat them. The Mountain West is very competitive this year, especially with the addition of Washington State, so this meet is going to be important for us in building confidence and refining our strategy.”
On the men’s side, the Cowboys are excited to compete against a WAC conference opponent, as their only conference dual meet so far this season was a win over Air Force in early November. Denniston expects a strong performance from his team against the Rebels.
“UNLV is still the top contender in the WAC for men’s swimming,” Denniston said. “We’re looking to be competitive and take things race by race. They have more depth than we do, but our top swimmers are competitive in several events, and we’re aiming for some wins.”
Following the two-day dual against UNLV, Wyoming’s swim and dive teams will next compete against Utah on Friday, January 31, in Green River, Wyoming, as part of a UW outreach event.
