Lauren Sanchez Faces Backlash for Lingerie-Inspired Outfit at Trump Inauguration
Lauren Sanchez, the fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, sparked a wave of criticism after attending the inauguration of President Donald Trump in a revealing ensemble that many social media users deemed inappropriate for the formal occasion.
Sanchez, a former journalist, children’s book author, and pilot, was photographed wearing a white Alexander McQueen pantsuit, which included a satin-trimmed blazer with a low-cut V-neck and wide-leg trousers. Underneath the blazer, she opted for a white lace bustier instead of a traditional blouse, a choice that attracted significant attention.
Sanchez, 55, completed her look with a fuzzy coat to ward off the cold, as well as a smoky eye makeup look, glossy nude lips, and a sleek updo. The outfit, which reportedly retails for around $1,800, was immediately criticized by some viewers, who took to social media to express their disapproval.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked that Sanchez was “incredibly inappropriately dressed for a state occasion,” with another commenting, “Today is NOT a nightclub event. Show some class & dignity.” Some users mocked her outfit, suggesting she “forgot to put a shirt on” and even joked that she might have borrowed it from a lingerie store like Victoria’s Secret.
The backlash also extended to comparisons between Sanchez’s outfit and that of Melania Trump, the First Lady, who wore a more conservative navy Adam Lippes coat and skirt ensemble to the event. Some users expressed that they were “luxuriating in the beauty and class” of the First Lady’s look before Sanchez arrived in her attention-grabbing attire.
While Sanchez’s outfit drew negative attention, a separate incident involving Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also made waves. During the inauguration, Zuckerberg was seen sitting next to Sanchez, and footage appeared to show him glancing at her cleavage, sparking further discussion on social media.
Despite the criticism, Sanchez’s supporters argue that personal style and fashion choices should be a matter of individual expression. Her outfit had previously made an impression at The New York Times DealBook event in December, where she wore the same form-fitting suit and shared a selfie on social media.
Sanchez and Bezos, who got engaged in May 2023 after five years of dating, have yet to announce the details of their wedding.
