New York City Mayor Eric Adams is scheduled to meet with President-elect Donald Trump on Friday to discuss the city’s priorities, marking a notable instance of collaboration between the embattled Democratic mayor and the Republican leader who once called New York home, Bloomberg reports.

“Mayor Adams has made quite clear his willingness to work with President-elect Trump and his incoming administration on behalf of New Yorkers,” Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy said late Thursday.

While maintaining a functional relationship between the nation’s largest city and the federal administration is crucial, Adams has demonstrated a greater willingness to engage with Trump than many other prominent Democratic figures. This comes after Adams faced criticism from within his own party following his indictment on federal corruption charges in September.

Notably, Adams joined Trump at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event at Madison Square Garden in November and, in contrast to many Democrats, has refrained from publicly criticizing the president-elect’s controversial cabinet appointments.

Further solidifying his divergence from many Democrats, Adams has also indicated he’s prepared to collaborate with the Trump administration to identify ways to deport violent criminals and enhance cooperation between federal and local law enforcement agencies on immigration matters. This stance stands in contrast to other Democratic leaders who have vowed to oppose the incoming administration’s expected crackdown on immigration.

Trump, for his part, has publicly suggested the possibility of pardoning Adams regarding the federal fraud and corruption charges, although he acknowledged not knowing the specifics of the case. At a charity dinner speech earlier in the campaign, Trump expressed well-wishes to Adams.
