As winter temperatures plummet, the City of Casper has issued a frozen pipe advisory to help residents prevent damage from the coldest days of the year, K2 Radio reports.

With subzero temperatures expected in the coming days, the city is urging residents to take immediate precautions to protect their plumbing. Extended periods of freezing weather increase the risk of pipes freezing and bursting, which can lead to significant flooding and costly water damage.

Water Distribution Manager Mark Anderson has recommended several steps to avoid frozen pipes:

  1. Run a Faucet at a Trickling Flow: Let at least one faucet drip slightly to keep the water moving and prevent freezing.
  2. Open Sink Cabinets: Allow warmer air to circulate around pipes by opening the cupboards under sinks, especially those on exterior walls.
  3. Increase Indoor Heating: Keeping indoor temperatures above 55°F will help protect plumbing and prevent freezing.

For residents of mobile or trailer homes, additional steps are advised:

  • Ensure the plumbing skirting is securely in place to block cold air.
  • Insulate drain pipes or use heat tape to prevent freezing.

“A burst pipe can quickly lead to significant damage,” said Anderson. “We encourage everyone to take these precautions over the next few days to avoid costly repairs.”

The City of Casper has provided emergency contact information in case of a pipe burst:

  • During business hours (Monday through Friday, excluding Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20), call (307) 235-8360 for assistance.
  • After hours, call non-emergency dispatch at (307) 235-8278 for emergencies requiring water shutoff.

“City crews are ready to help if needed, but we hope to have a safe and quiet weekend with no issues,” Anderson added.

By taking these preventive measures, residents can avoid the stress and expense of dealing with burst pipes during the winter months.
