The Wyoming Integrated Test Center (ITC), managed by the University of Wyoming’s School of Energy Resources, has been selected as one of five facilities nationwide to receive funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE), Casper Star-Tribune reports.

The grants aim to enhance carbon dioxide capture, removal, and conversion testing operations.

Located at the Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s Dry Fork Station, the ITC utilizes flue gas from a coal-fired power plant to conduct cutting-edge research on carbon management technologies. As part of this initiative, the ITC has entered award negotiations to expand its operations and accommodate more testing projects and advanced technologies.

“With an increasing number of technology developers committed to testing at the ITC, the facility will require enhanced operational support to maintain critical infrastructure and operations,” said David Lucke, SER Project Specialist.

He also noted that proposed improvements will extend the operational lifespan of the facility, ensuring it remains a key player in carbon management research.

Current tenants at the ITC include Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the Gas Technology Institute, and Colorado State University, each leveraging the facility’s unique access to flue gas for their testing and innovation efforts.

The DOE has allocated $101 million in funding to be divided among the five selected facilities. While the exact amount designated for the ITC has not yet been announced, the funding represents a significant opportunity to enhance Wyoming’s role in advancing carbon capture and conversion technologies.
