A woman who previously accused former UFC champion Conor McGregor of sexual assault is now pursuing a civil lawsuit against him and employees of the Kaseya Center, where she claims the incident took place, The Associated Press reports.
The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida by attorney James Dunn. The plaintiff, a 49-year-old senior vice president at a prominent Wall Street financial institution, alleges that McGregor assaulted her in a bathroom at the Kaseya Center during Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets on June 9, 2023.
“My client has thought long and hard about the decision to pursue this civil case and is fearful of the effect it may have on her job on Wall Street,” Dunn said. “Nonetheless, her main goal in filing this suit is to raise awareness and encourage others to report sexual assault.”
The lawsuit contends that arena staff and security had “actual knowledge of the wrongfulness of the conduct” and failed to provide adequate security for the plaintiff. It further alleges that staff continued to serve McGregor alcohol despite being aware of a “heightened risk of battery being carried out.”
The lawsuit details that McGregor attended the game for a promotional skit, during which he struck the Heat’s mascot, Burnie. After the game, the woman claims she was led to the men’s bathroom by a person affiliated with McGregor, where the alleged assault occurred.
Following the incident, authorities initiated an investigation but announced four months later that they would not be filing any criminal charges against McGregor.
The Associated Press has reached out to McGregor’s attorney for comment but has not yet received a response. Lorrie-Ann Diaz, a spokesperson for the Miami Heat, stated that the organization does not comment on ongoing litigation.
McGregor, a former UFC champion in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions, gained notoriety for being the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously. In a separate incident last November, a civil court jury in Ireland awarded 250,000 euros to a woman who claimed she was “brutally raped and battered” by McGregor.
