Winter driving in Wyoming can be challenging and dangerous, with icy conditions, snow, and plow trucks creating less-than-ideal road conditions, Wyoming News Now reports.
Whether you’re an experienced driver or a beginner, it’s essential to take extra precautions during the colder months to ensure your safety on the road.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) emphasizes the importance of driving slowly and carefully during winter months. Jordan Young, WYDOT’s Deputy Public Affairs Officer, recommends giving yourself plenty of following distance, which often requires reducing your speed.
“We recommend slowing down, turning off cruise control, and focusing on the road even more than usual,” said Young.
As Wyoming’s weather can change rapidly, Young advises drivers to “Know before you go.” This means checking road and weather conditions before heading out by using WYDOT’s 511 app.
“I often tell people that every time you stop for gas, check the conditions again to make sure things are still the same or whether any adjustments are necessary,” he added.
In addition to snow and ice, Wyoming’s roads also see snowplow trucks working to clear the way. Last winter, there were 26 collisions between vehicles and plow trucks. Young advises drivers to be aware that roads behind a snowplow are typically treated with salt and sand, while the area in front of the plow may not be.
“Plows move slowly, so if you do need to pass, wait until visibility improves,” he said.
While this winter has been relatively mild so far, Young cautions that drivers should not become complacent.
“Even if it’s dry or wet during the day, it can freeze overnight, leading to slippery conditions the next morning,” he warned. “Wyoming’s weather can always surprise you, so don’t let your guard down.”
