Germany is experiencing a bout of wintry weather, with snow and ice alerts issued across the northeast of the country, Bloomberg reports.

The freezing temperatures are driving up heating demand in Western Europe and causing disruptions to travel.

While the weather warnings are expected to expire by early afternoon, some German airports, including Leipzig Halle and Cologne Bonn, have already reported a significant number of flight delays due to the adverse conditions.

The cold snap has also impacted energy consumption. German power demand reached an 11-month high this morning as temperatures around Berlin plunged to -5C (23F). Further south, parts of Bavaria are bracing for up to 5 centimeters (2 inches) of snow overnight.

The surge in heating demand comes as Europe faces the ongoing energy crisis and underscores the impact of weather on energy markets.

Meanwhile, a stark contrast is unfolding in the Nordic region, where unseasonably warm weather is expected over the next five days. According to Maxar Technologies Inc., temperatures are forecast to be as much as 14C above the norm. Helsinki, for example, is expected to average 3C on Tuesday, nearly 7C higher than usual.

In London, temperatures are forecast to climb to 8C today, which is near the seasonal average, and are expected to reach 10C on Wednesday.
