Wyoming forward Abou Magassa was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week, marking the first weekly honor for the Cowboys this season, 7220 Sports reports.
The redshirt freshman from Morsang-sur-Orge, France, achieved a standout performance in Wyoming’s recent matchup against New Mexico.
Magassa posted a career-high 10 points during Wyoming’s 61-53 loss to New Mexico last Tuesday at the Arena-Auditorium. Demonstrating remarkable efficiency, he went 5-for-5 from the field, including two emphatic dunks. In addition to his scoring contributions, Magassa grabbed five rebounds, continuing to showcase his potential as a key contributor for the Cowboys.
Magassa is averaging nearly four points and 4.5 rebounds per game this season. Before his recent scoring breakout, he had shown flashes of his capabilities, with notable performances that included scoring nine points in a victory over Southeast Louisiana and securing nine rebounds in consecutive games against BYU and Bellarmine earlier in the season.
The Cowboys’ defense shone during the game against New Mexico, holding the Lobos to 18.5% shooting in the first half. This marked the lowest first-half shooting percentage by an opponent since Stetson managed just 18.2% in 2014 and the lowest by a conference rival since San Diego State’s 16.7% in 2013.
