Special Counsel David Weiss, who led the investigation into Hunter Biden, has released a scathing final report accusing outgoing President Joe Biden of undermining the justice system with claims that his son’s prosecution was selective and unfair, Al Jazeera reports.

The 280-page report, released on Monday, directly challenges President Biden’s assertions and defends the integrity of the Department of Justice’s work

Weiss, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, stated that the President’s claims of his son being singled out were “gratuitous and wrong.” He further criticized President Biden’s decision to use a pardon of his son as “an opportunity to malign public servants” at the DOJ, based on what Weiss called “false accusations.”

“Other presidents have pardoned family members, but in doing so, none have taken the occasion as an opportunity to malign the public servants at the Department of Justice based solely on false accusations,” Weiss wrote in the report.

The special counsel emphasized that the decision to prosecute Hunter Biden was the result of impartial investigations. He argued that suggesting otherwise weakens the “very foundation of what makes America’s justice system fair and equitable,” further eroding “public confidence in an institution that is essential to preserving the rule of law.”

Weiss firmly asserted that the prosecutions against Hunter Biden were not selective but rather a demonstration of equal justice under the law.

The release of the final report comes after President Biden issued a pardon last month for his son’s recent firearms and tax convictions. Hunter Biden was found guilty in June on gun charges related to lying about his drug use on a background check form, and he pleaded guilty in September to evading $1.4 million in taxes in a separate case. The President, in announcing the pardon, had said that any reasonable person would conclude his son had been selectively prosecuted due to his family name.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer has also responded to the report, criticizing Weiss for failing to explain why prosecutors “pursued wild – and debunked – conspiracies” surrounding the president’s son.

Under Justice Department regulations, special counsels must submit a final report at the end of their investigations. This report marks the formal conclusion of Weiss’s investigation into Hunter Biden.
