Macy’s announced plans to close 66 stores in 2025 as part of its ongoing “A Bold New Chapter” strategy, which aims to streamline its operations and focus on its most profitable locations, Axios reports.
The retailer confirmed the closures, which include both full-line department stores and smaller-format stores like Market by Macy’s and Backstage, will begin with liquidation sales in January.
This move is part of Macy’s broader effort to address its declining sales and adapt to shifting retail trends. Last year, Macy’s outlined plans to close 150 stores by 2026, about a third of its total locations, in an effort to refocus resources on a smaller number of more profitable stores. The company emphasized its commitment to its “350 go-forward Macy’s locations,” where it will concentrate future investments.
Macy’s Chairman and CEO, Tony Spring, explained that the company was prioritizing its high-end brands and shifting its resources toward locations with better growth prospects.
“We are closing underproductive stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores,” Spring said in a statement.
The closures come as the department store sector continues to face pressure from a variety of competitors, including fast-fashion chains, digital-first brands, and big-box retailers. Macy’s joins other well-known department stores in scaling back operations in response to these challenges. For instance, Kohl’s recently announced plans to close 27 stores by April.
The department store industry has undergone significant change in recent years, with notable bankruptcies such as Sears, JCPenney, and Neiman Marcus. Macy’s itself has been shrinking its footprint since 2020, when it closed around 80 stores. In 2023, the retailer closed five additional locations, and in 2024, further closures were planned.
The upcoming closures will be accompanied by clearance sales starting in January, expected to last between 8 to 12 weeks for most stores. For furniture galleries and standalone Backstage locations, sales will begin in February and run for around six weeks.
Macy’s store closures will span across various states, including:

- California: Chula Vista – Otay Ranch Town Center; Los Angeles – Downtown LA Plaza; San Diego – Mission Valley Home
- Florida: Boca Raton Furniture; Boynton Beach Mall; Fort Lauderdale Furniture
