Arthur Nelson, a 59-year-old inmate at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington, died on January 7, according to a statement from the Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC), Cap City News reports.
The cause of death remains under investigation, with an autopsy planned in accordance with WDOC policy.
Nelson, originally from Greyville, Tennessee, was serving multiple sentences for his convictions in Carbon County. He was found guilty of five counts of aggravated homicide by vehicle, for which he received 18–20 years per count to be served consecutively. In addition, Nelson was sentenced to another eight to 10 years for driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury.
Prior to sentencing, Nelson was credited with 591 days of time served. His case was presided over by Judge Dawnessa Snyder.
As per standard WDOC protocol, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of Nelson’s death. The department emphasized that no protected health information will be disclosed publicly.
