A rare mule deer fawn with striking blue eyes and a light-colored coat is capturing attention in Wyoming, Cowboy State Daily reports.

The fawn, spotted recently by wildlife enthusiast Jeff Orvin near La Barge, has become a subject of fascination due to its unusual appearance. Despite its striking features, wildlife observers report that the fawn appears healthy and strong.

The Wyoming Range mule deer herd, which has faced significant challenges in recent years, is beginning to recover, and this rare fawn is one of the promising signs of its resurgence. The herd has been a subject of interest for many, with legendary deer such as Goliath, Popeye, and Morty once coming from the area. While the herd’s population suffered a devastating blow in the winter of 2022-2023, it is now showing signs of recovery, including a bumper crop of fawns.

Orvin, who has been following the Wyoming Range herd for years, believes the fawn may have a genetic mutation known as leucism, which causes a partial lack of pigmentation. Unlike albinism, which results in a complete absence of pigmentation, leucism can cause a lighter coat and may not always lead to the pure white appearance associated with albino animals. The fawn’s tan-colored coat and blue eyes are consistent with leucism, though some experts may have differing opinions.

Despite its rare condition, the fawn seems to be thriving. Orvin, who frequently visits the area to observe the herd, noted that the fawn looks healthy, well-fed, and in good condition. He expressed hope that the fawn will continue to grow into a unique adult and remain a part of the herd in the future.
